Description: Ethiopia 1-birr, 1900-1903. The obverse shows a right facing portrait of Menelik II, Emperor. The piece is .835 silver and approx. 40 mm diameter. The obverse has some areas of dark toning, near black, at the rim around some of the lettering, and the other surfaces are various shades of grays and silver. The portrait still retains great detail on the elaborate crown, and the facial features of beard, ear, cheek, eye, and nose are still very clear. The clothing over the shoulder also still retains good detail. The reverse shows a lion, right to left, with head turned facing outward. The lion is holding a cross and is crowned and called the Lion of Judah. This side has some small areas of darker toning near the rims, but is mostly medium gray to silver in color.
